Sorry, I know it is your show and forum but I think basic D&D is a much better term than OD&D since you are including Holmes, B/X, BECMI and RC so I hope you will excuse the thread title.
That out of the way I enjoyed episode 098 of the Dekahedron RPG Podcast and would like to discuss these versions of the classes because I do think they have merit.
Evil Jeff has whole episodes on Minons and Musings about creating new classes using the “point buy system” as it were and I hope he will chime in on how well Snowgen did on the fly.
I like the idea of fighter/cleric for a Paladin or a dwarf fighter/cleric as Paladin if you want race as class. That said instead of the wood elf, which aren’t specifically playable in some editions, I would use the halfling for the fighter/druid combo as a ranger. That gives a special class to each of the demi-humans since elves already get fighter/magic-user.
Also I wasn’t clear, are you just adding the spell lists to the fighter or is this the whole AD&D 1E deal of picking the most beneficial saving throws and rolling hit dice for each class?
